After exploring Waitomo, we went to the Kiwi House in Otorohanga. Several people had recommended it to us. It’s a bird park, which includes New Zealand’s largest dome aviary. Inside there was a Kiwi House with several kiwis. Outside, there were many bird and reptile exhibits along a path. We saw many interesting birds, but I only took a few pictures. My favorite bird of the day was the Spur-winged Plover. It has a yellow face and yellow spurs on its wings.
I was quite amused when we came across a duck that kept talking back to us when we said hello. It is not one of the ducks pictured below though.
I saw the New Zealand Pigeon multiple times while on our road trip. Measuring 51 centimeters, it is huge for a pigeon.
I’m usually not very interested in birds, but the Otorohanga Kiwi House has an interesting variety of Native New Zealand birds and reptiles. The layout was also very open, with birds walking around in many areas instead of cages. I enjoyed seeing the many birds there.
